CERDAS Foundation is working with Karyalekha Basa Foundation to create learning centers in two rural areas: Desa Sukorejo, Kecamatan Bangorejo, Kabupaten Banyuwangi, and Desa Palaan, Kecamatan Ngajum, Kabupaten Malang. Both are in the province of East Java.
Most of the parents of the students in Desa Sukorejo work as overseas migrant workers (TKI) in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Saudi Arabia. The children are often left behind in the care of their relatives. In this rural area, education support and facilities are minimal. When asked what they want to be when they grow up, most of the children say they want to be overseas migrant workers like their parents. There is no library available as a place for them to read and learn.
The Rumah Belajar CERDAS Program was proposed by our local partner, Karyalekha Basa Foundation, to help these children. The Program is to create supplemental learning centers in these 2 rural locations as a place for children to acquire the skills and confidence necessary to be successful in life.
The learning centers will provide learning environment through non-formal education, mentoring, and a library. Children will be in the presence of adults who can motivate them and provide support for learning. They can learn simple skills such as how to read a book and describe the content to their friend, learn about their culture, and learn how to interact with others. The children will also be able to access basic learning resources that are not available to them at home or school.
