On Wednesday, September 21, 2016 around 01.00 p.m. Western Indonesian time, flash floods took over the Garut district in West Java, Indonesia.
Heavy rains the day before caused the Cimanuk and Cikuri rivers to overflow 2 meters, wiping out over 500 houses and displacing more than 1,000 people. There were at least 16 people dead, 30 people injured, 20 missing, and six districts affected by the flash flood.
Almost at the same time, two landslides triggered by heavy rain also occurred in the Sumedang district near Garut. Both landslides were between 20 and 25 meters high.
The disaster management agency reported five people dead, two people injured, one missing and over 200 houses destroyed by the landslide in the Sumedang district.
CERDAS Foundation collaborated with BEG, a local non-profit organization in Garut, have mobilized efforts to collect funds and provide support and relief to those impacted by the disasters.
In October 2016, a total of $5,000 raised funds have been distributed to help the survivors. The funds have been used for immediate needs to provide household items (gas stoves, hoses, regulators, and gas cylinders), buy school uniforms for students, clean school and provide school supplies, repair and renovate places of worships & restrooms, and repair damaged roads.
